A lubricant (most often a liquid) that is applied between two moving surfaces to reduce friction and wear. There are a lot of different lubes depending on their purpose of use and bicycle industry is no exception. Lubes vary from all-purpose ones meant to protect surfaces and keep threads turning smoothly to even weather-specific chain lubricants incorporating some exotic elements like parafin of teflon designed to withstand the harshest of conditions.
