BB is a common acronym for a Bottom Bracket.

Task Summary

If you have found during your assessment that the cranks are not rotating freely on a bike with an open/loose BB, you may be able to solve the problem by adjusting the BB (hence the name adjustable) before necessarily needing to take out the BB and replace or refurbish it.

To make a proper adjustment you must tighten or loosen the adjusting cup so that the cranks rotate without stiffness or sticking and have no side to side play whatsoever. If you cannot address the BB problem with this simple adjustment, you will need to go further and strip out and inspect the unit internally. You can then assess whether it should be replaced or repaired .
