BB is a common acronym for a Bottom Bracket.
Task Summary
Once the Bottom Bracket is out of the frame, the BB Shell will need cleaning and tapping. The reason for this is that the thread in the shell is likely to be dirty and corroded. The tapping process runs through the thread scraping out debris and rust. This enables new grease to be applied and consequently the BB thread can run smoothly into the shell upon re-installation.
Tools
A typical workshop BB tap consists of: handles - the main body of the tap that the mechanic holds to turn the cutters; the cutters - the thread that cleans the BB shell thread and the guide pin – which ensures the taps are aligned with each other and the thread. You will also need some cutting oil.
