Fitting Cross Top Levers
Step 01: mounting the lever
All Pages
Task Summary
These cross top levers here are shown coming from dual control levers on a drop bar set up. They are positioned normally close to the centre of the bar and tilted down slightly so that the rider can outstretch their fingers towards the floor and easily reach them. They are used frequently on drop bar bikes because they are more easily accesible for braking when the rider is sitting up. This type of lever can also be used on cantilever or dual and single pivot brakes.
WORKSHOP TIP: It is possible to fit cross top levers on a straight bar also - you will often see these on fixed gear bikes. The point of this is to decrease handlebar width and allow for scraping through small urban spaces - or maybe just to look cool?!! You decide. Obviously, on a straight bar the cable will only run through the cross top levers as there are no other levers being utilised. (If fitting cross-top levers to a straight bar, it is also advisable to use pear nipple brake cable as it will slot into place much better than a barrel end.)
