Braking systems have developed enormously since their invention as the humble rod brake (pictured). Some of these antiquated brakes are still in existence today, and some brakes have evolved to being capable of stopping bikes travelling at up to 60 mph. (Although don't try this at home!)

workshop_tip_iconWORKSHOP TIP: Of course some bikes have no brakes at all. Fixed gear bikes stop when the rider stops pedalling and the drive to back wheel is halted. Of course the safety of such bikes are debatable!
